Abused women gets help for free
Women Abused Gets Help from a Moving Company at No Cost
Getting out of an abusive relationship isn’t easy—but packing up and moving out is even more daunting.
It is daunting to pack up and move out after getting out of an abusive relationship, but thanks to Aaron and Evan Steed, these women are getting the help they need - for free.
Meathead Movers was founded in 1997
Aaron and Evan started their business, Meathead Movers, in 1997. During their high school years, all they wanted was to earn extra money. Back then, their fee was usually $20 and a pizza.
Then, their business grew, occasionally receiving frantic phone calls from women with little or no money who wanted to move out as quickly as possible before their abusers returned home.
They also provide insurance to women and moving crew
One day, in 2000, a circumstance turned unpredictable when the abuser came home in the middle of their move. Because of that, the company decided it had to ensure that the women and the moving crew were both safe, so they partnered with a local women’s shelter.
Meathead’s CEO Aaron Steed told Good News Network, "What was good about that is, they could be vetting the requests for help, supporting the women with counseling, and making sure when we went in, the proper restraining orders were in place, or police were on hand if necessary.”
#MoveToEndDV is the company’s new campaign
In 2000, the company expanded to different counties.
These moves have become personal to Aaron and Evan. It is an exceptional service they would like to offer. But this does not limit to women but to men also, anyone that is a victim of domestic violence.
Recently, the company launched a new campaign that asks other businesses to “get creative” and help victims of domestic violence. Called #MoveToEndDV, the Meathead Movers wish to motivate others to rethink how they can work with shelters, or help women as they try to rebuild their lives and move into their first home or apartment.
A lot of people have committed to help Aaron and Evan’s company
They aim to spark 100 new stories of businesses offering services and form a like-minded community. They have received commitments from stylists for free haircuts, from a realtor offering rental searches, and a counselor who has offered to help.
Aaron and Evan are excited about it. “It brings so much more purpose and passion to our lives, and if we can be an example for others, that is so much better.” said Aaron.
“The greatest purpose in life, the greatest achievement one could ever have in life, the greatest satisfaction one could ever get in life can only be found in the service of others.”
