Morgan Freeman Turns His 124-Acre Ranch into a Honey Bee Sanctuary

Morgan Freeman is one of the greatest actors of our time. He is also known as a film director and philanthropist. And now, he has another title added to his name, Beekeeper.

Freeman star chose to convert his entire 124-acre Mississippi ranch into a bee sanctuary, to help counter the decreasing population of our fuzzy little pollinators. He first began beekeeping in 2014. After a few weeks, he guested on the Jimmy Fallon show to discuss his new hobby.

He explained his motivation and the value of saving the wild bees on our planet.

There is a collective effort for bringing bees back into the planet.

“There is a collective effort for bringing bees back into the planet. We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation…” Morgan said.

He also shared how the 26 beehives were imported from Arkansas to Mississippi. Morgan feeds the bees with sugar water. These bees are still learning to adapt to their new environment and finding food from flowers. He also shared that he didn't need to wear a bee suit during the feeding. He inserts the sugar water into each of the beehives, and he didn't get stung, not even once.

He said that he also has no plans of harvesting their honey or in doing anything to disturb the beehives for profit.

Aside from his new hobby, he also helps in planting a large number of magnolia trees, lavender, clover, and other plants. He hopes that the little bees will feel at home at his ranch.

Morgan's efforts to help bees is such perfect timing.

Morgan's efforts to help bees is such perfect timing because the Environmental Protection Agency has notified the public of a Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) as the leading cause of the decline of bee populations nationally during the past five years.

The primary factors of CCD are human-related activities such as pesticides, insect-resistant genetically modified crops, and habitat loss. If the bee population continues to decrease, numerous potential ecological and agricultural issues can arise. Data from Greenpeace affirms that domestic and wild honeybees are responsible for 80% of global plant pollination.

We genuinely acknowledge Morgan Freeman’s kind and loving heart for doing what he can to save our beloved honey bees.
