Self-Cleaning Fish Tank That Grows Food

Aquaponics: Self-Cleaning Fish Tank That Can Grow Food

One of the biggest challenges, when you have a fish pet, is cleaning the aquarium's tank.  Emptying, rinsing, conditioning the water, and everything else sometimes gets more stressful for the pet owner and the fish pet as well.

But some fish tanks can clean on its own, which gives a significant advantage to the pet owner - saving a lot of time and effort.

Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez, founders of Back to the Roots

Aside from saving the pet's owner time,  self-cleaning tanks are better for the fish pet. Do you know why? Because it also gives a healthy environment for the fish. Yes, you read it right.

Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez, are two young entrepreneurs who co-founded Back to Roots.  These Berkeley graduates made a farm-in-a-box Mushroom Kit used recycled coffee grounds as a growth medium. Then they came up with the Home Aquaponics Kit, which is known as “a self-cleaning fish tank that grows food called AquaFarm.”

Regrowing of food can be more fun and easy

AquaFarm is a self-sustaining ecosystem. It is where the plants feed the betta fish, and its waste feeds the plants.

The AquaFarm uses an aquaponics system in which the wastes being produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals,  supplies the nutrients for the plants, which in turn purifies the water.

Plants feed the Betta fish, and its waste feeds the plants.

Aquaponics is an ancient natural farming practiced by the Aztecs and later embraced by some sustainability-minded farmers.

Having the right amount of food and light for both fish and the plants, you will end up a self-sustaining system that produces herbs or other vegetables in your table year-round.

Arora said that they wanted to make the re-growing of one's food fun and easy. Their ideas were to put a $100k goal at first, but the result was they ended up at $248K.
