“THIS IS MY AMERICA”: NYC's Subway Captures America's Diversity In The Best Way

The United States has a racially and ethnically diverse population. That’s why the word “diversity” can lead to problems, cause discomfort, and conflicts. Social diversity to a group makes people believe that differences might exist among them and that belief makes people change their behavior. While everyone thinks so much about these, there’s one man from Brooklyn, who found himself at the center of a scene that for him summed up America.

A Hasidic Jewish couple, and a nursing Muslim mother is a normal sight on New York City’s subway. According to a Facebook post, Summers gave up his seat on the subway so the Hasidic couple could sit together. Then, the couple scooted over to give a Muslim woman enough room to nurse her baby comfortably.

America is known for its diversity and is home to immigrants of all races and religions.

America is home to immigrants of all races and religions. With the rise in hate speech and crimes in the US, many are concerned for their safety, but one photo changed it all.

Jackie Summers captured the diversity of his country

Brooklyn man Jackie Summers, traveling in the subway, stood to his feet so a couple could sit together. However, it was when he stood up that he noticed the diversity of his country.

He shared a photo which sums up America pretty perfectly. He captured this moment while riding an F train on April 16, Easter Sunday.

Summers: “felt forced and staged.”

Summers said the photo, simply captures an everyday moment in his city and country. It’s worth noting that he didn’t ask the riders’ permission to take or post the image, as he said that would have “felt forced and staged.”

“As the grandchild of immigrants, my ancestors believed America to be a place where the possibility of equity existed,” Summers said. “While it’s clear we still have a long way to go to achieve that goal, I and people like me across this nation are fighting everyday to see that end.”

“This is my America: people letting people be people”, Summers added.

Speaking to The Independent, Summers said the moment had been very ordinary. “I did not think about giving up my seat for the couple; the couple did not think about moving along to make room for the mother with her child,” he said.

“We live in a time when race, sexuality and religion have become divisive…But we have more important things to worry about than the color of someone’s skin, or how they worship God.” Whatever color you are, religion you practice, or who you love, you all have one thing in common — you’re all American.

Way to go, Jackie. This will surely help other people bring back their faith  in humanity!

“If you treat people right they will treat you right … ninety percent of the time.”
